"Get fit" isn't a goal — it's a wish. It's vague enough that you can never really fail it, but also vague enough that you can never really achieve it either. Here's how I help clients turn that kind of wish into something that actually sticks.
Start with why, not just what
Before we talk numbers or timelines, we talk about why this matters to you. More energy for your kids, feeling strong again, being able to keep up on a hike, or just liking how you feel in your own body — the "why" is what keeps you showing up on the days motivation doesn't.
Make it specific and honest
A good goal is specific enough that you'll know when you've hit it, and honest enough that it actually fits your life right now. That might mean starting smaller than you'd like — and that's completely fine. Small, honest goals get hit. Big, unrealistic ones get abandoned.
Focus on the process, not just the outcome
Outcomes (a certain result, a certain feeling) matter, but they're mostly out of your direct control day to day. What you can control is showing up to your sessions, being consistent with your habits, and giving honest effort. Focus there, and the outcomes tend to follow.
Expect it to be non-linear
Some weeks will feel brilliant. Some will feel like you're going backwards. That's normal, not a sign you're failing. A good plan accounts for the messy weeks, not just the perfect ones.
Revisit and adjust
Goals aren't set in stone the day you write them down. As you progress, or as life changes, we revisit and adjust them together — so your training always matches where you actually are, not where you were three months ago.
